Maire McQueeney's Novel Outings

GRAHAM GREENE'S BRIGHTON

'Nor can any visit to Brighton be truly complete without one of the 20th-century literary walks led by that dynamic New Yorker Maire McQueeney; take her evocation of Graham Greene's Brighton Rock.......' Godfrey Smith, The Sunday Times 1997

BRIGHTON ROCK

"Greene's 1938 thriller, set in Brighton's criminal underworld of gang warfare and extortion rackets, is haunted by the poverty and pessimism of the 1930s.

Pinkie Brown, a sadistic homeless Boy befriended by the mobster Kite, revenges his mentor's death by murdering Fred Hale in sunny Brighton crowded with thousands of day trippers down for Whit Monday. Fred's abduction and murder at Palace Pier set the story in motion.

A detective story quickly becomes a morality tale of villains and victims where the seashore becomes "the dangerous edge of things," and a recognizable Brighton is the battle field for a confrontation between ethics and religion. Pinkie, encumbered by Rose and pursued by Ida, ends his life of crime and search for glory with a plunge into the stygian darkness from the cliffs at Peacehaven."
